Traveling by train from Bangkok
Bangkok’s main train station, Hualamphong Station, is centrally located.
Trains departing daily to many destinations in Thailand.
For overnight journeys, tickets should be bought at least a day in advance.
There is a luggage storrage office at the train station.
It is also possible to travel overland from Bangkok into Malaysia, there is a train each day to Butterworth (in Penang) which takes 21 hours.
From there its possible to continue to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore with an onward connection.

Travelling by train around Thailand is a good way to try the third class, travell with local people, very cheap and there is not so much difference with the first class, even better for some people like me who prefers fans than freezing aircon.
It is really fun actually because the train is really really slow so it is a good way to enjoy the landscapes of Thailand with the windows all open with locals sitting next to you with their baskets full of fishes they’re gonna sell in their hometown. The train is of course “Thai style” because it’s always late and it will stop if a cow is crossing the rails.
I have been by train to Ayutthaya (two hours from BKK and great temples to visit) and by night train to Nong Khai to reach Lao and its capital city Vientiane. You have a cozy seat and you can have a cheap and delicious meal (kao pad khai for example)and then transform that seat into a mattres with a blanket which is also comfy.
I strongly suggest people to travell in Asia by train, it is a nice experience.
